May 24, 2020: Sikkim, the only state in India to be coronavirus-free up until now, reported its first COVID-19 case on Saturday as a 25-year-old student who recently returned from Delhi tested positive for the disease, a senior official said.



The sample of the student was sent to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri for testing.



"A person from Sikkim who came back from Delhi has tested positive. The person was kept at the quarantine centre at Rabangla after he came back from Delhi. Today, his swab test report arrived in NBMC and accordingly, were forwarded to Sikkim Health Director," State Health Director General Dr Pempa Tshering Bhutia confirmed.

The student, who hails from Rabangla in South Sikkim district, is undergoing treatment at Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial (STNM) Hospital here, he said.



It may be stated that Sikkim had stopped the entry of tourists from February and has prohibited entry to any outsider till October.
