Sonapur Eviction Clash: Police Crack Down with Arrests, Another Squatter dies in GMCH

September 13, 2024: The ongoing eviction drive in Sonapur has turned violent leading to multiple arrests and heightened tension in the region. On Thursday, confrontations between squatters and police forces resulted in the deaths of two individuals.

In the wake of the violence, the Assam police have made significant moves, arresting five individuals and detaining six persons linked to the attacks on law enforcement and administrative personnel. Those arrested identified as Mohir Ali, Ainal Haque, Khabar Ali, Aminul Ali, Sadekul Islam and Moinuddin Ali.

The clash occurred as police and administrative staff attempted to carry out a court-approved eviction of illegal encroachments. The situation escalated when squatters violently resisted, resulting in a fatal shooting that injured Taufiz Ali, who later died at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

In response to the unrest, a large contingent of police and administrative officials has been deployed to Kasutoli in Sonapur to oversee the continuation of the eviction process.
