January 13, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the 6.5 km Z-Morh tunnel in Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district, making the picturesque Sonamarg tourist resort accessible throughout the year. This strategic infrastructure development promises to transform both tourism and defense connectivity in the region.
The Prime Minister arrived at Srinagar airport around 10:45 am and proceeded to Sonamarg, where he formally launched the much-awaited tunnel. Along with him were Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The Z-Morh tunnel, built at an investment of over ₹2,700 crore, connects Gagangir to Sonamarg and is expected to bypass areas that are prone to landslides and avalanches, ensuring safer passage.
Situated at an altitude of more than 8,650 feet above sea level, the two-lane tunnel includes a 7.5-meter-wide emergency escape passage. The facility promises to enhance year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg, offering a reliable route to Leh, which was previously susceptible to disruption during the winter months.
Prime Minister Modi's visit marks his first to Jammu and Kashmir since the assembly elections held in September-October 2024. During the inauguration, he also took time to meet the construction workers, recognizing their hard work in completing this monumental project despite challenging conditions.
The Z-Morh tunnel stands as a vital milestone in the region’s infrastructure, with long-term benefits for both the local economy and national defense strategy.
