April 5, 2025: Assam’s exquisite traditional jewellery, known as “Axomiya Gohona”, has received the prestigious GI (geographical indication) tag. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, shared the exciting news, highlighting the state’s rich cultural heritage.
The GI tag, granted by the Geographical Indications Registry under the Intellectual Property Office, recognizes Assam’s unique jewellery making traditions. The Application was submitted by the Gems and Jewellery Promotion Council of Assam, with support from the Assam Science and Technology Environment Council (ASTEC).
CM Sarma expressed his joy, recalling that the state govt proposed securing the GI tag in the 2018-19 budget to protect local artisans. “Another milestone of prosperity for Assam. Congratulations to every artisans who kept this legacy alive.” He said, celebrating the achievement.
