Two Fishermen Missing After Indian Navy Submarine Collides with Fishing Boat Off Goa

November 22, 2024: In a tragic incident off the coast of Goa, an Indian Navy submarine collided with a fishing boat, leaving two fishermen missing. The collision occurred approximately 70 nautical miles from the Goa coast, involving the Indian fishing vessel Marthoma and a Scorpene-class submarine, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defence.

The boat, with a crew of 13, was struck by the naval submarine, prompting a swift response from the Indian Navy. A massive search and rescue operation has been launched, with six ships and multiple aircraft deployed in the effort. As of now, 11 of the 13 crew members have been rescued, while two remain missing.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the search and rescue operations are ongoing, coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai. The Coast Guard has also been mobilized to support the operation with additional resources.

"The cause of the incident is under investigation," the Ministry of Defence said in its statement. Authorities are working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the collision.

The incident has raised concerns over the safety protocols in place for naval and civilian maritime operations, with both the Indian Navy and fishing communities now closely monitoring the rescue efforts.
