Tensions Rise in Ladakh Following Detention of Climate Activist Sonam Wangchuk; PIL Filed Against Detention

October 2, 2024: The recent detention of renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk by Delhi Police has sparked significant unrest in Ladakh, leading to blockades on National Highway 1 by his supporters. Wangchuk, along with approximately 120 others, was taken into custody at the Singhu border on Monday night while en route to the national capital to advocate for Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh, aimed at protecting the region's unique ecology.

Early this morning, around two dozen protesters set up makeshift barriers, using sticks and upturned traffic cones, about six kilometers from Fiang. Reports indicate that the blockades have stranded numerous tourists, including international visitors, creating a tense yet calm atmosphere. Visuals from the scene show a large group of protesters positioned behind the blockade, with approximately 100 vehicles, including 50 trucks, halted behind them.

In response to Wangchuk's detention, a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Delhi High Court on Tuesday, contesting the legality of the police action. The petition's counsel brought the matter before a bench led by Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela. While the court declined to hear the case immediately, it has agreed to schedule a hearing for October 3, contingent on the petition being submitted by 3:30 PM.

Wangchuk has been a prominent figure in the fight for environmental protection in Ladakh, advocating for sustainable development practices in the face of climate change.
