PM Narendra Modi Arrives in Kuwait for Two-Day Official Visit to Strengthen Defence, Security Ties

December 21, 2024:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kuwait on Saturday for a two-day official visit aimed at enhancing bilateral ties between India and the Gulf nation. This visit, which marks his first trip to Kuwait, follows an invitation from Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. The last Indian Prime Minister to visit Kuwait was Indira Gandhi in 1981.

During his stay, PM Modi will hold crucial talks with Kuwait's leadership, focusing on deepening cooperation in defence and security. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that discussions are underway for a potential bilateral investment treaty and a defence cooperation agreement, both expected to play a key role in enhancing strategic ties between the two countries.

Arun Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs (Overseas Indian Affairs), revealed that several agreements could be finalized during the visit, signaling a strengthening of India’s relationship with Kuwait and the wider Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), of which Kuwait is currently the chair.

In a statement before his departure, PM Modi emphasized that his visit would provide an opportunity to chart a roadmap for a futuristic partnership between India and Kuwait, underscoring the importance of this visit in shaping long-term bilateral relations.

Additionally, the Prime Minister is scheduled to meet members of the Indian diaspora in Kuwait, further bolstering the community's ties with the homeland.

This visit underscores India’s ongoing efforts to bolster relations with the Gulf region, particularly in areas of security and economic cooperation.
