September 25, 2024: In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court of India rebuked Karnataka High Court judge V Srishananda for referring to a Bangalore locality as "Pakistan," asserting that such comments undermine the nation’s territorial integrity. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud emphasized, "We can’t call any part of territory of India as Pakistan," during the proceedings.
The Supreme Court addressed the issue after Justice Srishananda issued an apology for his remarks. Following this, the apex court decided to close the suo motu proceedings initiated against him, but not without delivering a stern reminder regarding the responsibilities of judicial conduct.
In light of the incident, the Supreme Court also announced new advisory guidelines aimed at ensuring judges maintain the dignity of the court and refrain from making casual remarks that may reflect personal biases. The Court highlighted the importance of avoiding comments that could be construed as misogynistic or prejudicial to any segment of society.
