September 11, 2024: A BJP-supported Sikh group staged a protest outside Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's residence in Delhi today, driven by Gandhi's recent comments on the Sikh community's situation in India. The demonstration follows remarks Gandhi made during a visit to the United States.
While addressing a gathering of Indian Americans in Herndon, Virginia, on Monday, Gandhi discussed religious freedom issues in India. He stated, "The fight is about whether a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear his turban or kada in India, or be able to go to a gurdwara. This struggle is not just for Sikhs but for all religions."
The BJP has criticized Gandhi's comments, accusing him of spreading a "dangerous narrative" and discussing "sensitive issues" abroad. In response, the BJP-backed Sikh group protested outside Gandhi's Delhi home on Janpath road, where they attempted to break through police barricades.
Protesters carried signs reading "Why does Rahul Gandhi defame Sikhs after going abroad? Shame on you," voicing their displeasure with Gandhi's statements. The protest highlights ongoing tensions and sensitivities related to religious identity and freedom in India.
