April 5, 2025: The Cachar District Court has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a woman in a tea estate in 2020. The convict, identified as Gobora Bhumij, a resident of the Lower Division of Udharbond Tea Estate, was also fined ₹10,000 by the court.
According to the case details, the incident occurred on March 3, 2020, at Endogram Tea Estate under the Udharbond area of Cachar district. The victim, a female tea garden worker, was on her way to the garden office after being summoned when Gobora Bhumij forcibly dragged her into a nearby forest and raped her.
Following the incident, a case was filed at Udharbond Police Station, and the accused was named in the FIR. Police launched an investigation and later submitted a chargesheet against Bhumij under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
After a lengthy trial, the district court found Gobora Bhumij guilty of the crime and handed down the punishment of 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine. Following the verdict, Bhumij was transferred to Silchar Central Jail to serve his sentence.
The judgment is being seen as a step toward justice for the victim and a stern message against crimes targeting women.
