Khel Ratna Award: Manu Bhaker, D Gukesh, Harmanpreet Singh, Praveen Kumar to Receive India’s Highest Sporting Honor

January 2, 2025: The Sports Ministry has announced the recipients of the Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, India’s highest honor for sportspersons. The prestigious award will be conferred upon Olympic medallist shooter Manu Bhaker, chess world champion D Gukesh, men’s hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh, and Paralympic high-jumper Praveen Kumar. The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on January 17, 2025, at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where the President of India will felicitate the honorees.

Manu Bhaker’s inclusion in the list marks a triumphant chapter in her remarkable career. The 22-year-old shooter made history at the Tokyo Olympics, becoming the first Indian athlete to win two medals in a single edition. She secured bronze in the 10m air pistol individual and mixed team events. Her selection for the Khel Ratna comes after initial reports suggested her name was omitted from the recommendations, sparking public debate. Addressing the issue, Bhaker expressed gratitude and acknowledged a possible lapse on her part during the nomination process, while reiterating her commitment to winning more accolades for the nation.

D Gukesh, at just 18 years of age, has emerged as a global sensation in chess. He became the youngest-ever World Chess Champion and played a key role in India’s historic gold medal win at the Chess Olympiad last year. His achievements have positioned him as a shining star in the sport and a source of immense pride for the country.

In hockey, Harmanpreet Singh has been a cornerstone of India’s resurgence on the global stage. Under his leadership, the men’s team secured a second consecutive bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, further cementing India’s dominance in the sport. His contribution as captain and player has earned him the highest sporting honor this year.

Praveen Kumar, the fourth recipient, showcased extraordinary grit and determination in the T64 high jump category at the Paris Paralympics. Competing with a prosthetic leg, Kumar clinched gold, setting a record that highlights the indomitable spirit of para-athletes.

The announcement also included 32 names for the Arjuna Awards, recognizing outstanding performances across a variety of sports, with 17 para-athletes among them. This year’s list reflects the diversity and excellence of Indian sports.

As the nation gears up to celebrate its sporting heroes, the recognition serves as a testament to their dedication, perseverance, and success on the global stage. The awards ceremony promises to be a moment of pride and inspiration for the entire country.
