January 27, 2025: In a significant diplomatic development, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met Liu Jianchao, head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, during his visit to Beijing on Sunday. The discussions centered around implementing the Ladakh border agreement, enhancing bilateral dialogue, and addressing regional and international concerns.
This visit is part of the ongoing exchanges between India and China aimed at mending strained ties following the prolonged military standoff in Ladakh. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that the talks focused on political, economic, and cultural cooperation while emphasizing the importance of resolving the Line of Actual Control (LAC) dispute.
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning welcomed the visit, describing it as a continuation of the understanding reached between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping during the BRICS summit in Kazan last year. “It reflects the commitment of both nations to advancing dialogue and stabilizing relations,” Mao stated.
Key agenda items included the potential resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, direct flight connections between the two countries, and simplified visa processes for Chinese citizens. The visit follows National Security Adviser Ajit Doval's trip to Beijing last month, underscoring a shared commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
The two sides have expressed cautious optimism about achieving tangible progress, marking a hopeful step toward rebuilding trust and fostering cooperation.
