January 23, 2025: External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar has reiterated India’s openness to accepting the legitimate return of its citizens living illegally abroad, including in the United States. Speaking at a press conference in Washington, D.C., Jaishankar clarified that this stance is not unique to the US but represents a consistent and principled approach by India.
"We have always taken the view that if there are any of our citizens, who are not here legally, if we are sure that they are our citizens, we have always been open to their legitimate return to India," Jaishankar said. The Foreign Minister also emphasized that this position had been clearly communicated to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during their recent discussions.
While addressing the issue of illegal migration, Jaishankar made it clear that India remains firmly opposed to such practices, citing their potential to trigger other unlawful activities and harm the country’s reputation. However, he underscored India’s strong support for legal mobility, highlighting the government’s commitment to ensuring that Indian skills and talent have global opportunities. "We believe in a global workplace. We want Indian talent and skills to have the maximum opportunity at a global level," he said.
The Minister also raised concerns about the long waiting periods for US visas, stating that it hampers the relationship between the two nations. He conveyed this sentiment to Secretary Rubio, expressing hope for better facilitation of legal and mutually beneficial mobility. "If it takes 400 odd days waiting period to get a visa, I don't think the relationship is well served by this," he said.
Jaishankar’s visit to the US was marked by his participation in President Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony, where Trump took office as the 47th President of the United States on January 20. Representing India at the event, Jaishankar delivered a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the newly sworn-in President, further strengthening ties between the two democracies.
The Indian government’s balanced stance on migration issues reflects its dedication to safeguarding its citizens’ interests while fostering international cooperation and mobility.
