China Reports Troop Disengagement at Four Sites in Eastern Ladakh, Including Galwan Valley

September 14, 2024: China announced on Friday that it has successfully disengaged its troops from four locations in eastern Ladakh, including the strategically significant Galwan Valley. This development is seen as a significant step towards easing tensions between China and India, which have been strained due to a prolonged military standoff in the region.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning confirmed that the disengagement is part of ongoing efforts to stabilize the border situation. Mao emphasized that both nations have been working to improve bilateral relations, as evidenced by recent high-level discussions between Chinese and Indian officials.

On September 12, during a meeting in St. Petersburg, Chinese State Councilor Wang Yi and India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval discussed recent advancements in border negotiations. Mao highlighted that the two sides are committed to implementing the agreements reached by their leaders, fostering mutual trust, and enhancing bilateral relations.

Mao's remarks come in response to a statement by Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who on Thursday noted that approximately 75 percent of disengagement issues have been resolved. Jaishankar, however, pointed out concerns regarding the increasing militarization of the frontier as a continuing challenge.
