Shillong: The Central Government has asked the Meghalaya state government to address several concerns regarding the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system.
This move comes amid long-standing demands to introduce ILP in Meghalaya, which aims to regulate the entry of non-residents into the state.
As per officials, the Centre is not opposed to the idea of ILP, but it has raised certain questions that need to be answered satisfactorily.
Cabinet Minister and MDA spokesperson, Paul Lyngdoh, 'explained' that the challenge in implementing ILP lies in Meghalaya being a transit route for neighbouring states like Mizoram, Tripura, and certain districts of Assam.
Despite the Centre's concerns, discussions are ongoing, and efforts are being made to persuade the Centre by responding to the queries raised. The state government has been engaging with the Union Home Ministry, which believes Meghalaya already has protections under the Sixth Schedule, Land Transfer Act, and autonomous district councils.
