BJP and Opposition Clash Over Waqf Bill in Heated Committee Meeting

October 15, 2024: A chaotic scene unfolded on Tuesday during a parliamentary committee meeting discussing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, as a clash erupted between MPs from the ruling BJP and opposition parties. This confrontation marks the second consecutive day of turmoil in the committee, with opposition members alleging that BJP MPs resorted to offensive language.

The brawl was ignited during a debate over a proposal to include women in Waqf boards, drawing sharp exchanges between BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey, Dilip Saikia, and Abhijit Ganguly, alongside Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee, and Congress's Gaurav Gogoi. Accusations flew both ways, with the opposition claiming that committee chairperson Jagdambika Pal failed to uphold procedural norms and take action against the BJP members, while BJP MPs accused the opposition of disrespecting the chair.

The contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill was initially introduced by the Centre on July 28, but faced fierce opposition, leading to its referral to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on August 8. Tensions escalated further on Monday when Anwar Manippady, former chairperson of the Karnataka State Minorities Commission, made allegations against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, claiming his involvement in Waqf land scams. This prompted the opposition to walk out of the meeting in protest.
