December 18, 2024: Indian cricket stalwart Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket, marking the end of an illustrious career. The announcement came on Wednesday during a press conference at the Gabba in Brisbane, with Indian captain Rohit Sharma by his side.
Ashwin’s decision follows the conclusion of the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which ended in a draw. Captain Rohit Sharma confirmed that Ashwin would not continue with the team for the remaining matches and would return to India on Thursday, December 19.
“This will be my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats of the game at the international level,” Ashwin stated. “I do feel there is a bit of punch left in me as a cricketer. I would like to showcase that in club-level cricket. I’ve had a lot of fun and created countless memories alongside Rohit and many of my teammates.”
Ashwin expressed gratitude to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), his teammates, and coaches who played pivotal roles in his journey. “I must thank Rohit, Virat, Ajinkya, and Pujara, who have taken those vital catches in the slips to help me achieve my milestones,” he said.
The 37-year-old off-spinner retires with remarkable statistics, having claimed 537 wickets in 106 Test matches, cementing his legacy as one of the finest bowlers in cricket history. Ashwin was also part of the Indian team that won the ICC ODI World Cup in 2011, a milestone etched in the annals of Indian cricket.
While fans and teammates bid farewell to one of India’s greatest cricketing icons, Ashwin hinted at continuing his love for the game through club cricket. His departure leaves a significant void in the Indian lineup, with his contributions both on and off the field being fondly remembered.
As the cricketing world celebrates Ashwin’s achievements, tributes have begun pouring in for the man whose guile, skill, and perseverance defined an era in Indian cricket.
