August 2, 2024: Imane Khelif of Algerian, who failed a gender eligibility test last year, knocked their Italian opponent out in 46 seconds in the 66 kg women's boxing category. Italian Angela Carini was distraught, she collapsed on her knees and sobbed in the middle of the ring after the defeat. She was unable to stand after her nose was hit and began bleeding.

A boxing round lasts for 3 minutes and there were three rounds in each but the Algerian boxer landed two strong punches.

Along with Khelif, Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting, who fights on Friday at 57 kg is the other 'biologically male' boxer competing at the Paris Olympics. Both the boxers were disqualified from the 2023 World Championships in New Delhi run by the International Boxing Association (IBA) after failing to meet gender eligibility tests.

However, the International Olympics Committee (IOC), which is running boxing in Paris because of governance, financial and ethical issues at the IBA, deemed both boxers eligible to box in the women's competition in Paris.

This gender row controversy has sparked global outrage among high-profile figures such as former US President Donald Trump, tech billionaire Elon Musk, and Itanian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
