March 3, 2025: The Congress party found itself in a controversy after its spokesperson, Shama Mohamed, made remarks criticizing Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma for his fitness and leadership. Her now-deleted social media post, in which she called Sharma “fat for a sportsman” and “the most unimpressive captain India has ever had,” sparked widespread outrage from cricket fans and political rivals alike.
As the backlash grew, Congress intervened and asked Mohamed to remove the post. The party distanced itself from her remarks, with Congress leader Pawan Khera stating that the party respects sporting icons and does not endorse statements undermining their legacy. “We have advised her to exercise greater caution in the future,” he said.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swiftly condemned Mohamed’s comments, accusing Congress of body-shaming an athlete who has brought glory to the nation. BJP leader Radhika Khera, a former Congress member, lashed out at her previous party, claiming it had a history of undermining sportspersons. “This is the same Congress that humiliated athletes for decades. Now, they dare to mock a World Cup-winning captain?” she remarked.
Mohamed, however, defended her statement, denying allegations of body-shaming. “It was just an observation about fitness, not an attack,” she said, adding that she believes sportspersons should maintain peak physical condition.
The controversy came on the heels of India’s impressive 44-run victory over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025. Despite Rohit Sharma’s early dismissal, the team posted 249 runs before the bowlers, led by Varun Chakaravarthy, dismantled the Kiwi batting lineup. With this win, India secured a semi-final clash against Australia on March 4.
