Pregnant elephant found dead near Assam-Meghalaya border, poaching suspected

Guwahati: A decomposed carcass of a pregnant elephant was reportedly discovered on Tuesday at a village on the outskirts of Guwahati, along the Assam-Meghalaya border.

Forest officials stated that the elephant was likely killed by poachers, who removed parts of its meat, leaving the intact fetus behind.

Reports also stated that preliminary investigations found that the elephant was killed around 15 days ago, allegedly by poachers from Meghalaya.

The Assam Forest Department has registered a case and launched a probe into the incident, while the Meghalaya Forest Department has also initiated an inquiry.

It has further been alleged that the elephant was mainly killed for its meat.
