November 25, 2024: In light of ongoing concerns over public safety and law and order, the Manipur government has decided to extend the suspension of mobile internet services in nine districts for an additional two days. A directive issued by the state’s Home Department on Monday confirmed that mobile internet, mobile data services, and related services like VSATs and VPNs will remain blocked until 5:15 PM on November 27, 2024.
The suspension, which initially began on November 16, was implemented to prevent the spread of provocative content by anti-social elements. This move followed a surge in violence after the discovery of the bodies of three women and three children, an event that escalated tensions in the region.
The extended ban will cover the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Jiribam, and Pherzawl, according to the order issued by N. Ashok Kumar, the Home Department Commissioner. The decision was made after a thorough review of the current law and order situation.
The government had first imposed the mobile internet suspension in seven districts on November 16, and later expanded the restrictions to include Jiribam and Pherzawl. The move aims to curb the potential for unrest and to maintain public peace in the affected areas.
