Manipur CM N Biren Singh Announces Massive Combing Operation in Jiribam, Appeals for Calm Amid Rising Violence

November 27, 2024: In response to the escalating violence in Jiribam, Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced a series of decisive measures by both the state and central governments to address the ongoing unrest. At a press conference on Tuesday, Singh revealed that large-scale combing operations have been initiated in Jiribam and surrounding areas to track down and apprehend those responsible for the recent violent incidents. He emphasized that these operations would continue until the perpetrators are brought to justice.

Singh also highlighted several key developments aimed at stabilizing the situation, including a proposal to lift the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from six newly identified police station areas in the state. This move, part of a broader security review, is seen as an attempt to normalize the situation and restore civilian governance in the region.

"The decision to remove AFSPA from the six police stations has been forwarded to the Government of India for implementation," Singh explained. "Additionally, the investigation into the recent killings in Jiribam will be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which will further intensify counter-terrorism operations," he added.

Singh confirmed that the central government had accepted several points from the state's proposals, including the transfer of investigations to the NIA. The agency has already taken charge of three significant cases related to the violence in Jiribam, issuing a statement confirming its involvement in the probe.

In his address, the Chief Minister reiterated the government's commitment to maintaining law and order and assured the public that the combing operations would continue relentlessly. He also appealed to the people to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities during this critical period.

The violent incidents in Jiribam, which have left several people dead and many others injured, have raised serious concerns about security in the region. The violence is believed to be linked to increasing insurgent activities in the state, prompting both local and national security forces to ramp up their presence in the area.

Singh also pointed out that the ongoing operations would focus on neutralizing terror elements and restoring peace in the affected areas. The decision to involve the NIA is seen as a crucial step in addressing the rising threat of terrorism and insurgency in Manipur, which has seen a surge in violence in recent months.

As tensions remain high, local authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement. The government has promised to keep the public updated on developments and assured that all measures are being taken to ensure the safety of the citizens of Manipur.
