November 11, 2024: In a significant development, at least 10 militants were killed in a fierce encounter with Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in Manipur's Jiribam district on Monday afternoon. The gunfight erupted after militants launched an attack on a CRPF camp in the region, leading to intense clashes.
During the encounter, a CRPF jawan was injured and has since been airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. The CRPF, which has been deployed in the region amid ongoing ethnic violence, responded swiftly to the attack, neutralizing the militants in a counter-offensive that lasted several hours.
The attack marks the latest in a series of militant-related incidents in Manipur, which has been grappling with violent clashes between ethnic groups. Since May 2023, the state has witnessed widespread violence, primarily between the Meitei community in the Imphal Valley and the Kukis from the hill regions. The violence has resulted in over 200 deaths and displaced thousands, with many still living in temporary shelters.
In a related development, reports indicate that armed militants set several shops ablaze in Borobekra subdivision of the district. The militants reportedly fired at the Borobekra police station around 2:30 PM before advancing towards Jakurador Karong, where they engaged in further acts of arson.
The escalating violence in the region has raised concerns about the security situation in Manipur, with local authorities and security forces ramping up efforts to contain the spread of militant activity. Meanwhile, calls for peace and reconciliation continue to grow as communities seek a resolution to the ongoing ethnic conflict.
