November 14, 2024: Violence erupted in Rajasthan's Tonk district on Wednesday, after Independent candidate Naresh Meena allegedly slapped Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Amit Chaudhary during the Deoli-Uniara bypolls, triggering widespread chaos and clashes.
The incident took place at a polling station in Samravata village, where Meena is contesting as an Independent candidate. Tensions escalated after the alleged assault, leading to violent protests from Meena’s supporters. The situation quickly spiraled out of control as police attempted to arrest Meena, resulting in stone pelting, arson, and the torching of several vehicles.
Ajmer Range Inspector-General of Police, Om Prakash, confirmed that 60 people had been arrested in connection with the violence. "There was a ruckus, stone pelting, and arson in Samravata village late last night when police tried to apprehend Naresh Meena," Prakash said in a statement to the press. "Many vehicles were set on fire and vandalized during the clashes."
The violent scenes unfolded as tensions ran high in the region during the bypolls, which are being closely watched in the context of the ongoing political rivalry in Rajasthan. Police forces have been deployed in large numbers to restore order, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The alleged assault on the SDM has sent shockwaves through the region, with political leaders and authorities condemning the violence. The Election Commission has called for a report on the incident, while the state government has promised stringent action against those responsible for the unrest.
