October 19, 2024: In a significant move to strengthen women's rights in India, the Narendra Modi government has appointed Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar as the new chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW). The announcement was made on Saturday, with the NCW confirming the appointment through a post on social media platform X.
The NCW stated, “In pursuance of Section 3 of the NCW Act, 1990, the Central Government has nominated Smt. Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar as the Chairperson of National Commission for Women.” Her term will commence immediately and is set to last for three years or until she turns 65, whichever comes first. The formal announcement will be published in the Gazette of India.
In addition to Rahatkar's appointment, the government has also introduced new members to the NCW, including Dr. Archana Majumdar, who will serve alongside Rahatkar for a three-year term. This reshuffle reflects the government's ongoing commitment to promoting gender equality and addressing women's issues at a national level.
Rahatkar, a well-respected figure in women’s rights advocacy, is expected to lead the NCW in tackling pressing issues such as gender-based violence, economic empowerment, and social justice for women across India. Her leadership is anticipated to bring fresh perspectives and renewed energy to the commission's initiatives.
