The Twitter map shows Jammu and Kashmir as a separate country and Ladakh as part of China

June 28, 2021: Micro-blogging site Twitter has courted controversy yet again. This time for showing a distorted map of India on its website. The map shows Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as not part of India. The map that appears on the ‘Tweep Life’ section, shows Jammu & Kashmir as a separate county and Ladakh as part of China.

This is not the first time that Twitter has shown the wrong map of India. Earlier in October 2020 too, Twitter had shown Leh in Ladakh as part of China.

This incident comes amid the number of issues that has left Twitter directly at loggerheads with the Government of India.

Centre has issued a warning to the US-based social media platform over misrepresentation of India's map. The government had said that such incidents not only bring disrepute to Twitter but also raises questions about its neutrality and fairness.

The Twitter-India Government tussle had reached a flashpoint on Saturday when the site had blocked Union Law and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad for almost an hour.

Meanwhile, Twitter has appointed its global legal policy director Jeremy Kessel as grievance officer for India. Kessel is based out of California and this could be another issue. The appointment of Kessel was made necessary as Twitter's interim resident grievance officer for India, Dharmendra Chatur had stepped down on Sunday amid rising tension between Twitter and the Central Government.
