NIA to handle investigations of ULFA-I bomb threats in Guwahati and Lakhimpur

August 20, 2024: The Assam Police will transfer the inquiry of the recent bomb threats by ULFA-I in Guwahati and Lakhimpur to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

GP Singh, Director General of Police, stated on Monday night that four individuals have been arrested in relation to the case. "We have apprehended four individuals, which includes one individual connected to placing one of the explosive devices." He told the press that due to the complexities of the case, they have chosen to ask for help from the NIA in probing the bomb threats in Guwahati and Lakhimpur.

He also promised the state's continuous dedication to upholding peace and security for the public. For the past 40 years, we have been fighting against terrorism in Assam. Today, we are closer to eliminating those activities than we have ever been before. Singh also stated that strict measures will be taken against those attempting to bring back the violent and terrifying days. Earlier, following the bomb threat from the ULFA-I on Independence Day, Assam Police announced a Rs 5 lakh reward for credible information about the bomb planting.

In Guwahati, law enforcement found bomb-like items in four out of the eight locations mentioned in ULFA-I's press release, while Lakhimpur saw two similar discoveries. In the meantime, a suspect associated with the banned ULFA-I group has been captured by the Assam Police after a bomb scare caused alarm across the state, including Guwahati, on Monday. Based on information received, Jalukbari Police conducted an operation resulting in the apprehension of Pawan Darji, a suspected ULFA-I member, in the Gorchuk vicinity on Monday night. Darji is presently in custody at Jalukbari Police Station, where he is undergoing interrogation. Police sources stated that Darji had been blackmailing for money.
