Maharashtra Minister Questions Saif Ali Khan Attack: "Really Stabbed or Just Acting?"

January 23, 2025: Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane stirred controversy by questioning the authenticity of the recent attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. Speaking at an event in Pune, Rane remarked, "When I saw Saif Ali Khan after he was discharged, I doubted whether he was really stabbed or just acting."

The 54-year-old actor was discharged from Lilavati Hospital on Tuesday, five days after he was attacked by an intruder at his residence. The minister's comments have sparked outrage, particularly among Bollywood circles and opposition leaders.

Rane also criticized opposition leaders for selectively showing concern for celebrities. "Why do NCP leaders like Supriya Sule and Jitendra Awhad always come out in support of Khans, but never for a Hindu artist?" he questioned.

Saif Ali Khan was hospitalized on January 16 after being stabbed by an intruder identified as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national. Shehzad reportedly broke into the actor's flat with the intention of committing theft but was confronted by Saif after being spotted in the room of the actor's younger son, Jeh.

In the ensuing altercation, Saif sustained multiple stab wounds, including a severe injury near his spine. Immediate surgery was performed to remove a knife fragment and address spinal fluid leakage, doctors confirmed.

Minister Rane also used the incident to draw attention to the issue of illegal immigrants in Mumbai. "Bangladeshis have moved from living at the Mumbai port to entering our homes. Perhaps they had other motives beyond theft," he said, without offering any evidence to substantiate the claim.

The incident has reignited debates over celebrity security, illegal immigration, and the politicization of such events. Meanwhile, Saif Ali Khan, who is recovering at home, has refrained from commenting on the controversy.

Critics have called Rane's comments insensitive and questioned their timing, with some accusing the minister of attempting to politicize a traumatic incident. Supporters of the actor have demanded an apology, while the opposition has condemned Rane for using the attack to further a political narrative.

The accused, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, remains in police custody and is being interrogated for further details regarding the break-in.
