March 18, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday praised the successful organization of the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, calling it a shining example of "Sabka Prayaas" (everyone’s effort). Speaking in the Lok Sabha, he emphasized how the event showcased India's unity and grandeur to the world, reflecting the spirit of a rising nation. Thanking all those who contributed to its success, he acknowledged the efforts of the "karm yogis"—government officials, volunteers, and society members—who worked tirelessly to make the religious gathering a seamless experience.
The 45-day Maha Kumbh, one of the world's largest religious congregations, culminated on February 26, drawing over 66 crore devotees who took a sacred dip at the Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers meet. The Prime Minister himself visited the site on February 5, taking a holy dip and offering prayers to Goddess Ganga. He underscored how the event became a unifying force for the country, especially at a time when the world is grappling with turmoil. Referring to ongoing wars in the Middle East and Europe, he pointed out that the Maha Kumbh was a powerful demonstration of India’s strength, proving that the country’s unity in diversity remains its greatest asset. He also expressed happiness over the younger generation’s participation in the religious festival, stating that their growing connection with traditions was a positive sign for the future.
However, the grand event was not without challenges. A tragic stampede during Mauni Amavasya on January 29 resulted in the deaths of 30 people, according to official reports, though the opposition claimed that the actual toll was much higher. Concerns were also raised about the cleanliness of the sacred waters, with a report from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) revealing high levels of faecal coliform bacteria in the river. The opposition strongly criticized the BJP-led Yogi Adityanath government, accusing it of failing to ensure proper sanitation and hygiene management.
Despite these challenges, the Maha Kumbh 2025 emerged as a grand spectacle of faith and devotion, drawing not only millions of pilgrims but also political leaders, celebrities, and international dignitaries. PM Modi asserted that the event had given a befitting reply to those who doubted India’s strength, describing it as a moment of national awakening that would inspire the country toward new achievements.
