Kolkata murder case: Supreme Court says lack of safety at work is denying women’s safety, proposes national task force for safety of doctors

August 20, 2024: On Tuesday, Supreme Court has begun its hearing on RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s trainee doctor’s rape and murder case. The bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud during the hearing said that this was not just about one case but the systemic issue of doctors’ safety in the nation.
SC questioned the principal and the police for the delay in filing FIR. The court also questioned the actions of the hospital authorities and expressed concern over the Kolkata Police’s inability to prevent a mob of thousands from entering the medical college.
CJI says that there is a need for a national protocol for safe work conditions for doctors and medical personnel because it is not every time there is a rape and murder and the conscience of the nation will be awakened.
The CJI said that if women are not able to go to work and conditions are not safe, we are denying them equality. He also expressed his concern over the fact that the name and photo of the victim have been all over the media.
The Supreme Court pulled up the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government over its lackadaisical approach while dealing with the case and asked the CBI, which is currently investigating the matter, to submit a report by Thursday.
A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra heard the case on Tuesday.
