January 6, 2025: The Karnataka High Court has refused to quash the FIR filed against Nikita Singhania, the estranged wife of IT professional Atul Subhash, who died by suicide on December 9, 2024. The court observed that prima facie evidence warranted further investigation and directed the government to submit all documents related to the case.
The single-judge bench raised concerns over the lack of progress in collecting key evidence, including Subhash’s suicide note and video, which allegedly accused his wife and in-laws of harassment. While adjourning the matter for two weeks, the court also asked the government to file its objections to the plea.
Singhania, her mother, and her brother were granted bail on Saturday by a Bengaluru court. However, Singhania challenged the FIR in the High Court, asserting that her arrest was unwarranted and unjustified. Her counsel argued for interim bail to allow her to prepare her defense at the Supreme Court.
The case has drawn national attention due to the release of a video by Subhash before his death, in which he accused Singhania and her family of harassment. The video and accompanying suicide note, both widely circulated on social media, alleged that the family’s actions were pushing him to despair.
Subhash and Singhania were reportedly undergoing divorce proceedings, and Subhash claimed in the video that his wife and in-laws had been framing him in false cases, adding to his distress.
The High Court’s decision to let the investigation continue marks a critical step in the case, as authorities work to gather and verify evidence surrounding the incident.
