October 19, 2024: Junior doctors in West Bengal have issued a stark warning to the state government, threatening a state-wide strike on October 22 if their demands are not met by October 21. This ultimatum comes after nearly two months of protests sparked by the alleged rape and murder of a colleague from R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Debasish Halder, a spokesperson for the protesting medics, emphasized the urgency of their situation, stating, "We want the chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, to engage in a dialogue and implement all our demands. If this is not achieved, junior and senior doctors from both government and private healthcare facilities will be compelled to strike on Tuesday."
The agitation was ignited by the tragic death of a postgraduate trainee doctor in August, which has led to widespread calls for justice and improved safety measures within the healthcare system. The doctors are advocating for significant reforms, including enhanced workplace safety protocols and a centralized referral system.
In a show of solidarity, some colleagues have begun a fast-unto-death, escalating the pressure on the government. "If the chief minister does not act by Monday, we will be left with no option but to go on strike," Halder warned.
The situation remains tense as the deadline approaches, and the healthcare community is closely monitoring the response from the Mamata Banerjee administration.
