October 18, 2024: In a show of solidarity, India has extended humanitarian assistance to Lebanon, sending medical supplies as the region faces escalating violence from ongoing Israeli strikes against Hezbollah. The Ministry of External Affairs announced the dispatch of 11 tons of medical supplies, marking the first tranche of a larger commitment totaling 33 tons.
Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared the details on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “India sends humanitarian assistance to Lebanon. A total of 33 tons of medical supplies are being sent. The first tranche of 11 tons was dispatched today.” The shipment includes essential pharmaceuticals such as cardiovascular medications, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), anti-inflammatory agents, antibiotics, and anaesthetics.
The situation in Lebanon has deteriorated sharply over the past month, with Israel launching a ground campaign in response to attacks from Hezbollah and other groups. Tensions have intensified following an October 1 missile attack attributed to Iran, a key ally of both Hamas and Hezbollah.
Recent Israeli airstrikes have resulted in significant civilian casualties and infrastructure damage. Just yesterday, at least 22 people lost their lives in strikes across Lebanon, while an airstrike on Thursday destroyed the municipal headquarters of a major town, claiming at least 16 lives, including that of the town's mayor.
