October 25, 2024: In a significant diplomatic move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi affirmed India’s readiness to contribute to peace efforts in the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia. His remarks came during a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who emphasized the need for India's involvement in seeking a political resolution to the prolonged conflict in Ukraine.
"The ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia are a matter of concern for both nations," Modi stated after the 7th Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC) with Scholz. "India has always maintained that war cannot be a solution to problems. We are ready to make every possible contribution for the restoration of peace."
The discussions underscored the necessity for reforms in global governance, particularly in multilateral institutions like the United Nations Security Council, which Modi described as inadequate to tackle the complex challenges of the 21st century. Both leaders acknowledged that the strategic partnership between India and Germany serves as a crucial stabilizing force amid global tensions and uncertainties.
Highlighting the importance of their relationship, Modi characterized the India-Germany partnership as "transformational" rather than merely transactional, underscoring the collaboration between two robust democracies. "In the Indo-Pacific region, we face serious concerns regarding the rule of law and freedom of navigation. In times like these, our strategic partnership has emerged as a strong anchor," he remarked.
This meeting marks Scholz's third visit to India, which Modi referred to as a "triple celebration" of the growing friendship between the two nations. He reflected on the significant advancements made since the last IGC in Berlin in 2022, noting progress in various sectors such as defense, technology, energy, and sustainable development.
Additionally, Modi welcomed Germany's 'Focus on India' strategy, expressing his satisfaction with the initiatives being taken to deepen the bilateral partnership. "We are moving from a 'Whole of Government' approach to a 'Whole of Nation' approach, which will further strengthen our ties," he stated.
