February 12, 2025: Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar has been convicted in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case by Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court on Wednesday. The case pertains to the brutal killing of Jaswant Singh and his son, Tarundeep Singh, in Saraswati Vihar on November 1, 1984, during the riots that erupted following the assassination of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Special Judge Kaveri Baweja pronounced the conviction, and the matter has been listed for sentencing arguments on February 18. Kumar, who is already serving a life sentence in another anti-Sikh riots case in Delhi Cantt, was produced before the court from Tihar Jail for the verdict.
According to the prosecution, an armed mob indulged in widespread looting, arson, and destruction of Sikh properties, leading to the death of the father-son duo. The court noted that Kumar was not only a participant in the violence but also led the mob.
The case was initially registered at Punjabi Bagh police station but was later taken over by a Special Investigation Team (SIT). In 2021, the court framed charges against Kumar after finding a prima facie case against him.
Reacting to the verdict, Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) General Secretary Jagdip Singh Kahlon welcomed the decision. “Sajjan Kumar, who led the massacre of Sikhs 40 years ago, has finally been convicted. We hope for justice in the Jagdish Tytler case as well,” he said.
The conviction marks another significant development in the long-pending cases related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of Sikhs across India.
