October 24, 2024: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar underscored the importance of dialogue in resolving disputes during his address at the BRICS outreach session in Kazan, Russia. Highlighting the need for adherence to agreements, Jaishankar stated, “Prime Minister Modi has emphasised that this is not an era of war. Disputes and differences must be settled by dialogue and diplomacy. Agreements, once reached, must be scrupulously respected. International law should be adhered to, without exception.”
Jaishankar’s remarks come on the heels of a significant breakthrough in India-China relations, with both nations reaching an agreement to resolve a longstanding border dispute in eastern Ladakh. This agreement follows extensive negotiations, including 17 rounds of working mechanism meetings and 21 rounds of military dialogues, marking a return to pre-2020 patrolling arrangements.
During the discussions, Prime Minister Modi welcomed the border agreement, stating that India-China ties are crucial for global peace and stability. He expressed that “mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity will guide bilateral relations” during the delegation-level talks held on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.
Modi also reiterated India’s commitment to peace in the face of global conflicts, noting the ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, including Israel's conflict with Hamas. Jaishankar further addressed the escalating tensions in West Asia, expressing concern over the potential spread of conflict in the region. He emphasized the serious humanitarian and economic consequences of further escalation, advocating for a fair and durable resolution that leads to a two-state solution.
