College student taken into custody for offensive comments directed at Mamata Banerjee

August 19, 2024: Kolkata Police arrested a sophomore BCom student for a controversial social media post that encouraged violence towards West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Kirti Sharma, also known as "kirtisocial" on Instagram, is alleged to have incited others to assassinate the Chief Minister.

Kirti Sharma was arrested at his Lake Town home on Sunday. The police claim that Sharma posted three social media updates about the brutal incident with the 31-year-old doctor. Authorities claim that the posts contained personal information and revealing images of the victim, which goes against the law.

The police claimed that the suspect revealed the identity and picture of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor who was discovered brutally raped and killed at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The Kolkata Police issued a statement saying they received a complaint about a person with Instagram ID 'kirtisocial' posting three Instagram stories about the RG Kar Hospital incident. The posts revealed the victim's image and identity, which is very offensive. Furthermore, the defendant disclosed two narratives that included disrespectful remarks and threats to the Chief Minister of West Bengal. These remarks are inflammatory and could incite social instability and fuel animosity between different groups. The police have labeled the youth's online content as "provocative," indicating it may spark social upheaval and breed animosity within the community. The situation became even more tense with the case, as public and media focus increased on the management of the crime and online responses.

The Kolkata Police has taken strict action against social media posts regarding the rape-murder case. Trinamool MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray received summonses after he publicly called for the CBI to question the Kolkata police commissioner. The former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee and two well-known doctors were also given summonses by the police for allegedly spreading misinformation and revealing the victim's identity.
