Guwahati: An Assam Police Sub-Inspector (SI) named Hemlata Saikia was arrested for allegedly abducting and illegally confining a seven-year-old child from Madhya Pradesh.
A joint team of Madhya Pradesh Police and Noonmati Police apprehended Saikia, rescued the child, and took her into custody for interrogation following a raid on an ashram she owns in Shanti Nagar, Narengi, Guwahati.
The case traces back three years when a mother and her then four-year-old son went missing from Madhya Pradesh. The victim’s family filed an FIR at Dehat Police Station in Damoh, prompting an investigation. While the mother was located in Guwahati and handed over to Madhya Pradesh authorities at the time, the child remained missing. After a three-year probe, Madhya Pradesh Police discovered the now seven-year-old was being held at Saikia’s ashram.
The police team, supported by Noonmati Police, raided the ashram. However, their efforts were initially thwarted as Saikia allegedly verbally abused the officers and physically assaulted a constable, preventing entry. Following directives from senior officials, the team forcibly entered the ashram, rescued the child, and reunited him with his parents.
Saikia, already a controversial figure with a history of legal troubles, including prior arrests for land fraud and cheating, now faces fresh charges. A case has been registered under Case No. 68/25, and she is currently under interrogation for her alleged role in the abduction and confinement.
