April 2, 2022: Bohag or Rongali Bihu is one of the major festivals of Assam. Celebrated from April 14, it marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year.

Bohag Bihu is celebrated for seven days - Goru Bihu (for the cattle), Manuh Bihu (for the people), Sot Bihu, Raati Bihu, Kutum Bihu, Mela Bihu and Sera Bihu. Celebrations usually go on for the entire month of April.

During the Bohag Bihu, people dress up in their traditional attire such as dhoti-punjabi (silk kurta), gamosa (the Assamese traditional towel), and mekhela sador made of Assam silks – paat and muga.

Jetuka (mehendi) application on hands is a must do during Rongali Bihu. Beautiful motifs are drawn in the palms of girls and ladies.

Another integral part of Rangali Bihu get up for girls and women are wearing a bun with a garland of Kopou Phool (orchid), Togor (crape jasmine) and Nahor (Indian rose chestnut). This is part of the Assamese tradition during Bihu and every Bihuwoti (female Bihu dancer) must wear these flowers in their bun.

Here are some easy hair styles you can try this Rongali Bihu:

Classic Bun

The classic bun is simple, tied low, and ideal for letting other pieces of your wardrobe shine. You can choose to adorn it with one or two blooms and get the simple yet gorgeous look.

High Bun

The high bun is a good way to keep your hair out of your face and look elegant. For an extra sleek and long-lasting style, first, work a little mouse into the roots of your hair. Then, comb your locks back away from your face and brush them into a ponytail, securing the style with a hair tie. Next, twirl the ponytail until it settles around the hairband then secure it with hair clip.

Low Bun

Low buns are the ultimate choice for girls. A low bun is simple enough to create at home but is just as stunning as a look that’s fresh from the salon. If you want to take your hairstyle up a notch, try a braided low bun.

Messed Up Side Braid

This is one hairstyle for a girl in saree or mekhela sador will look good for any event or occasion. This is the simple braid where you sweep all your hair to one side of your shoulders and then keep braiding it casually. When you are done, you can tug out hair from the braid and make it look as messy as you can. Curly and wavy hair is the best match for the perfect messy braid look.

Curly Bun Haircut

This hairstyle for curly hair with mekhela sador is the classic curly bun. In this one, you make your hair curly first and then start combing it. Once done, you take all your hair from the front and then tie it into a normal bun. Lastly, you just need to pull out some curls on both sides of the face for a softer touch.

Open Hairstyle

It looks very simple and elegant. Let your hair loose, with a middle partition, with your tresses falling beautifully on your either shoulders and straighten them a little bit. This hairstyle fits all types of mekhela sador or saree.
