161 schools to be closed in Assam, will merge under ‘Sikhsa-Khetra’ scheme

August 19, 2024: The Director of Elementary Education on Monday announced the names of 161 schools of Assam which will be closed permanently.  These 161 schools will be amalgamated or merged under the ‘Siksha-Khetra’ scheme.



According to the announced notice, in 17 districts 161 schools will be merged with nearby other schools.



In Majuli total 31, Bongaigaon 14, Lakhimpur 19, Hailakandhi 10, Barpeta 6, Nagaon 7, Nalbari 6, Kamrup (M) 4, Tinsukia 4, Karimganj 8, Dibrugarh 5 schools are to be closed and merged with other school.



In Assam, during the time of BJP government, allegedly, till now around 8 thousand schools were closed due to lack of the students.
