December 18, 2024: US President-elect Donald Trump has reiterated his stance on imposing reciprocal tariffs on nations that levy high duties on American goods, including India. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump outlined his vision for a trade policy that ensures fairness and equality in international commerce.
“Reciprocal. If they tax us, we tax them the same amount. They tax us. We tax them. And they tax us. Almost in all cases, they're taxing us, and we haven't been taxing them,” Trump said, as reported by news agency PTI.
While answering questions about the possibility of a new trade agreement with China, Trump singled out India and Brazil as examples of countries imposing high tariffs on US products. His remarks highlight a potential shift in US trade policy aimed at addressing what he perceives as unfair treatment of American goods in global markets.
India, known for its tariffs on several imported items, including agricultural products and electronics, could face renewed scrutiny under Trump’s proposed policy. This statement comes amid growing discussions about reshaping trade relationships and ensuring a level playing field for US industries.
As Trump prepares to take office, his comments signal an assertive approach to trade, which may lead to adjustments in the dynamics of US-India economic ties.
