September 2, 2023: The 66-year-old Indian-origin leader Tharman Shanmugaratnam was elected as the president of Singapore by receiving 70.4 per cent of the votes in the presidential election which was held on September 1, 2023.



Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Tharman for winning the election. Taking to X, PM Modi said to Tharman, “I look forward to working closely with you to further strengthen the India-Singapore Strategic Partnership.”





Tharman is the ninth president of Singapore and the third Indian-origin person to head for the next six years. He served as Senior Minister of Singapore between 2019 and 2023.



According to sources, Tharman, born in Singapore, attended the Anglo-Chinese School before graduating from the London School of Economics (LSE) with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics.
