March 9, 2025: A family of White Backed Vulture, have found a safe haven in the backyard of Phuleswari Dutta of Lakhimpur district. A resident of Korhaghat village near historic Vasudev Thaan in west Dhakuwakhona, the elderly woman has been taking care of the vulture with her equally enthusiastic son Krishnakanta Dutta since 1989.
The story began when a pair of vulture nested in a tree in her backyard. While there was a lot of societal pressure to get rid of them, as they are called bad omen, but Phuleswari Dutta stood firm in her decision to provide shelter for them.
The white backed vulture is a critically endangered species listed by IUCN (3.1).
Her backyard also houses exotic birds like orange breasted green pigeon.
Dutta, a teacher by profession, has also received support from conservationists Amal Chandra Dutta and Debojit Phukan.
