UP Journalist, Another Man Arrested for Offensive Social Media Posts on Mahakumbh, Hindu Deities

January 22, 2025: Uttar Pradesh police have arrested two individuals, including a journalist, for allegedly making offensive remarks on social media about the Mahakumbh and Hindu deities. The arrests, made on Tuesday evening, come in response to public outrage over the posts, prompting authorities to heighten social media monitoring.

Kamran Alvi, who identifies himself as a journalist with over 9,000 Facebook followers, was apprehended after sharing a video that reportedly insulted the Mahakumbh and hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community. SHO Alok Mani Tripathi confirmed the arrest and stated, “A case has been registered under Section 299 of the BNS Act, which pertains to deliberate acts intended to outrage religious feelings. The accused will be presented in court.”

Authorities are also investigating others who may have played a role in circulating the contentious video.

In a separate incident, Abhishek Kumar, a resident of Boja village near Jaidpur, was arrested for allegedly posting objectionable comments about Hindu deities and the Mahakumbh on social media. SHO Amit Pratap Singh stated that a case has been filed, and Kumar is currently in custody.

The incidents have sparked a wave of discussions about online content regulation and the sensitivity surrounding religious beliefs in India. Police officials have urged citizens to exercise caution while posting on social media to avoid legal repercussions and communal disharmony.
