January 26, 2025: A tragic accident marred Republic Day celebrations in Odisha as a pick-up van carrying 23 students overturned in Subarnapur district on Sunday morning. The mishap claimed the life of one student and left 23 others injured, with four in critical condition.
The victims, all Class 10 students from North Banki Mala Biharpur Government School in Athagarh, were en route to Saranda ground to participate in Republic Day festivities when the accident occurred.
Preliminary investigations suggest a loose front wheel caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, leading to the overturn. The driver and three students sustained severe injuries.
Emergency responders quickly transported the critically injured to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where they are receiving intensive care in the trauma ward.
A local doctor at the hospital confirmed the details, stating, "We received 23 students following the accident. Unfortunately, one died on the road, while four were critically injured and transferred to SCB Medical College. The administration has been notified to address the situation."
The remaining students suffered minor injuries and were treated at a nearby hospital. Authorities are investigating the incident to determine further safety lapses.
This Republic Day, the nation mourns the loss of a young life while ensuring the injured receive the best possible care.
