Serve, Don’t Seek: PM Modi’s Guiding Principles for Success in Politics

January 10, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a podcast conversation with Zerodha founder Nikhil Kamath, shared his insights on what it takes to succeed in the demanding world of politics. Stressing the importance of communication, dedication, and a mission-driven mindset, the Prime Minister underscored that personal ambition alone cannot sustain success in the political arena.

“Entering politics is easy, but achieving success is an entirely different challenge,” PM Modi remarked, emphasizing that true political success demands unwavering dedication, empathy, and a genuine connection with people. “A politician must be there for the people during their good and bad times and work effectively as part of a team,” he said.

Drawing a sharp distinction between personal ambition and a mission-driven approach, PM Modi stated, “Individuals driven by a mission will succeed, while those fueled by personal ambitions will fail. Politics is not about taking, gaining, or making—it’s about serving the nation selflessly.”

The Prime Minister also reflected on the lessons from India’s struggle for independence, highlighting the patriotism and selflessness of leaders from diverse backgrounds. “After Independence, many leaders brought unmatched maturity, dedication, and a deep sense of purpose to politics. This spirit is what today’s political leaders need to emulate,” he noted.

Citing Mahatma Gandhi as a shining example, PM Modi explained how Gandhi’s connection with the masses and his ability to communicate transcended the barriers of traditional leadership. “Gandhi may not have been a great orator, but his personality united a nation. That’s the power of genuine leadership,” he said.

On young people entering politics, the Prime Minister expressed optimism and a need for fresh talent. “India requires one lakh dedicated young politicians, driven by a selfless desire to serve the nation,” he said, urging the youth to focus on the greater good rather than short-term gains.

When asked about comparisons between entrepreneurship and politics, PM Modi described the fundamental difference: while entrepreneurs work for the growth of their companies, politicians must always put the nation first.

As the discussion wrapped up, PM Modi’s message resonated with a call to action for aspiring leaders: embrace politics with a mission, stay rooted in the people’s concerns, and prioritize the nation above all else.
