Nine Killed in Naxal-IED Attack on Security Forces Vehicle in Chhattisgarh

January 6, 2025: In a devastating attack, nine individuals, including eight personnel from the Dantewada District Reserve Guard (DRG) and their driver, were killed when their vehicle was targeted in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast orchestrated by Naxals. The incident occurred on Monday in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh as the security forces were returning from a joint anti-Naxal operation involving teams from Dantewada, Narayanpur, and Bijapur.

Bastar Inspector General of Police confirmed the attack, describing it as a deliberate and calculated assault by the Naxals. The blast marks one of the most significant attacks in recent months and underscores the persistent threat posed by the insurgent group in the region.

This incident comes shortly after an intense encounter between security forces and Naxal operatives in Bastar. In that operation, five Naxals were killed, though the security forces also suffered a loss, with a DRG head constable losing his life.

The attack has cast a shadow over the central government’s ongoing efforts to eliminate Naxalism by March 2026. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during a recent visit to Chhattisgarh, highlighted progress in counterinsurgency operations, which included the killing of 287 Naxals, the arrest of over 1,000, and the surrender of 837 insurgents over the past year.

In tandem with central measures, the Chhattisgarh government has introduced policies aimed at encouraging Naxal surrenders. These include rehabilitation and reintegration programs designed to reduce the appeal of insurgency among local populations. Initiatives such as the Community Policing Programme for Naxal-Affected Areas have been launched to strengthen trust between law enforcement and communities, fostering cooperation in combating the insurgency.

The attack in Bijapur serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by security personnel operating in Naxal-affected regions. As the nation mourns the loss of these brave individuals, the government has reiterated its commitment to eradicating Naxalism and ensuring the safety of citizens in vulnerable areas.
