Indian Navy to Commission Two Combat Warships and a Submarine in Mumbai on January 15

January 1, 2025: The Indian Navy is poised to achieve a significant milestone in its maritime journey with the commissioning of two combat warships and a submarine at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on January 15. This landmark event, highlighting India’s strides in defence manufacturing, will see the induction of the stealth frigate Nilgiri, the stealth destroyer Surat, and the Scorpene-class submarine Vagsheer.

These platforms, all designed and constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai, symbolize India’s growing expertise in indigenous defence production and its commitment to self-reliance under the “Make in India” initiative. The addition of these vessels reinforces the Navy’s operational capabilities, showcasing advancements in stealth technology, weapon systems, and multi-role versatility.

Nilgiri, the lead ship of the Project 17A class, features cutting-edge stealth technology and improved radar invisibility, making it a formidable presence in naval operations. Surat, the final vessel of the Project 15B series, reflects a leap in destroyer design with enhanced sensors and modern systems, further strengthening the Navy’s combat fleet.

The Scorpene-class submarine Vagsheer adds a crucial undersea capability. As the final submarine under Project 75, it is one of the most advanced diesel-electric submarines globally, equipped for anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and special operations. With provisions for future upgrades such as Air Independent Propulsion technology, Vagsheer is set to enhance India’s underwater warfare capabilities significantly.

This historic commissioning event, following rigorous sea trials, highlights the Navy’s readiness to deploy these advanced platforms for safeguarding maritime security. It also underscores the nation’s emergence as a global leader in defence manufacturing, marking a proud moment for India’s defence and technological prowess.
