Gauhati High Court Orders Submission of Post-Mortem Report in Alleged Police Torture Case of Dipankar Gogoi

April 2, 2025: The Gauhati High Court has issued strict directives to the Assam government, ordering the submission of the post-mortem report of Dipankar Gogoi, who allegedly died by suicide due to police torture. The court has also mandated a detailed report on the examination of his internal organs.

Dipankar Gogoi, a resident of Jorhat, was arrested on suspicion of involvement in a bomb blast incident in Raraiya. Reports suggest that while in custody at Jorhat and Titabor police stations, he was subjected to brutal third-degree torture by the police. Unable to endure the ordeal, Dipankar reportedly took his own life near his residence.

Before his death, he revealed the names of the officers responsible for his torture to his sister. Allegations state that he was tortured continuously for two days. Following his death, complaints were lodged against four police personnel, including the then Superintendent of Police, Mohanlal Meena.

Dipankar’s sister, Rimli Gogoi, approached the High Court seeking a CBI investigation into the case. Responding to her plea, the High Court on Wednesday directed the state government to submit both the post-mortem report and a comprehensive internal examination report without delay.

This development has intensified discussions about alleged custodial torture in the state, with rights activists demanding justice for the deceased and strict action against those responsible.
