January 18, 2025: Football mourns the loss of Denis Law, a Manchester United legend and Ballon d’Or winner, who passed away at the age of 84. Manchester United confirmed his demise on Saturday, paying tribute to one of the club’s greatest icons.
Law, affectionately known as "The King of the Stretford End," began his illustrious football career at Huddersfield Town before making his mark as a prolific goal-scorer with Manchester United. Over his 11-year tenure at Old Trafford, he scored an astounding 237 goals in 404 appearances, earning his place among football’s elite.
In a heartfelt statement issued through Manchester United, Law's family said, "It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father, Denis Law, has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but is now at peace. We thank everyone who contributed to his care and well-being and for the love and support shown to him."
The club expressed their condolences, saying, "Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End. He will always be celebrated as one of the club's greatest and most beloved players. The ultimate goal-scorer, his flair, spirit, and love for the game made him the hero of a generation. His memory will live on forever."
Law’s impact on football extended beyond Manchester United. After starting his career at Huddersfield Town in 1955, he played for Manchester City, broke records with Torino, and then joined United in 1962 under the legendary Sir Matt Busby. He was instrumental in United’s successes, scoring in the 1963 FA Cup final and playing a pivotal role in securing league titles in 1965 and 1967. In 1964, his extraordinary performances earned him the prestigious Ballon d’Or as Europe’s best player.
Despite being sidelined by injuries during United’s historic 1968 European Cup triumph, Law’s contributions remained unparalleled. He returned to Manchester City in 1973 and retired after representing Scotland in the 1974 World Cup, where he became the country’s joint all-time top scorer with 30 goals in 55 appearances.
Denis Law’s passing marks the end of an era. His legacy, both on and off the pitch, will continue to inspire generations of football fans and players worldwide.
